🌍 About the Company
The client is a regulated FinTech company preparing to launch payment processing services under an Electronic Money Institution licence. The business is establishing the financial governance, controls, and reporting processes required to operate successfully in the European payments market. Joining at this stage means having a direct influence on the company’s accounting framework before payment operations begin. The company operates within the Latvian and wider European financial services regulatory environment.
💼 About the Role
As Chief Accountant, you will establish and take ownership of the company’s accounting function, including its policies, systems, controls, transaction accounting, and regulatory reporting processes. Your initial priority will be ensuring that the complete accounting framework is documented, implemented, and ready before payment services launch.
Following the launch, you will maintain the accounting function, manage reporting obligations, support audits and regulatory reviews, and ensure continued compliance with Bank of Latvia and other applicable requirements. This is a hands-on leadership role with the potential to develop the accounting team as the business expands.
🔍 Responsibilities
Design and implement the company’s end-to-end accounting framework for regulated payment operations;
Develop, document, and maintain internal accounting policies, procedures, controls, and reporting standards;
Ensure compliance with Bank of Latvia Regulations No. 291 and No. 208 and other applicable accounting and regulatory requirements;
Establish robust processes for recording, processing, reconciling, and controlling financial transactions;
Determine the appropriate accounting treatment for payment-related income, fees, expenses, settlements, safeguarding arrangements, and other transactions;
Build reliable processes for collecting, validating, and preparing financial data for statutory, management, and regulatory reporting;
Prepare and submit accurate reports to the Bank of Latvia, tax authorities, and other relevant institutions within required deadlines;
Take ownership of the general ledger and month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes;
Work with operations, compliance, risk, product, and technology teams to ensure that financial data flows and controls are complete and reliable;
Coordinate external audits and regulatory reviews while monitoring changes that may affect the company’s accounting framework.
🎓 Requirements
At least 5 years of professional accounting experience, including ownership of financial reporting, closing, and internal controls;
Practical knowledge of Latvian accounting, taxation, and statutory reporting requirements;
Experience within a regulated financial institution, payment institution, electronic money institution, bank, or comparable FinTech business;
Strong understanding of Bank of Latvia regulatory reporting and accounting requirements applicable to payment services;
Proven experience developing or materially improving accounting policies, procedures, systems, and controls;
Ability to assess complex financial transactions and determine their appropriate accounting treatment;
Advanced Excel skills and confidence working with accounting systems and large financial datasets;
Professional fluency in Latvian and English, including the ability to prepare policies and formal reports.
Nice to Have
Previous involvement in launching or licensing a payment institution or EMI;
Knowledge of payment processing, safeguarding, settlement, reconciliation, and client-funds accounting;
Experience working with IFRS and financial regulatory reporting frameworks;
A recognised accounting qualification such as ACCA, CIMA, or an equivalent credential;
Experience selecting, implementing, or integrating accounting and ERP systems.
