🌍 About the Company
The client operates in European payments, providing card-acquiring services to e-commerce merchants. Its work sits within the international Visa and Mastercard ecosystem and requires disciplined management of merchant, fraud, chargeback and regulatory risks. The company is strengthening its risk capabilities as its merchant portfolio and institutional responsibilities develop. This is an opportunity to gain broad exposure across both frontline merchant decisions and enterprise risk management.
💼 About the Role
As Risk Analyst, you will manage the risk lifecycle of e-commerce merchants, from onboarding due diligence and underwriting through ongoing transaction monitoring and offboarding. You will work at the intersection of merchant risk, fraud prevention and card-scheme compliance while escalating potential financial crime concerns to the AML team. Reporting to and supporting the Head of Risk, you will also contribute to enterprise-wide risk assessments, management reporting and broader risk projects.
🔍 Responsibilities
Conduct risk-based due diligence on prospective e-commerce merchants, reviewing their business models, websites, products and underwriting information;
Assess merchant applications against Visa and Mastercard rules, MCC classifications, internal policies and the company’s risk appetite;
Assign and periodically review merchant risk ratings, transaction limits, reserves and settlement conditions;
Monitor transaction volumes, fraud and chargeback ratios, refund patterns and changes in merchant activity;
Track exposure against card-scheme monitoring thresholds, including VAMP, ECP and EFM, and coordinate remediation or scheme communications;
Screen merchants through relevant services and databases, including MATCH and VMSS, and maintain clear evidence of completed checks;
Investigate transaction spikes, unusual activity and fraud indicators, recommending holds, limit changes, escalation or offboarding where appropriate;
Identify merchant-level AML and financial crime red flags and escalate well-documented concerns to the AML team;
Support the enterprise-wide risk assessment, risk register, control mapping and reporting to the Management Board;
Contribute to new product, market and partnership assessments while tracking remediation actions and audit or regulatory findings.
🎓 Requirements
At least 1 year of experience in risk, underwriting, merchant onboarding or fraud within a card acquirer, payment institution or EMI;
Practical knowledge of Visa and Mastercard rules, MCC classifications and merchant-risk monitoring;
Working knowledge of AML/CTF principles and the ability to recognise and escalate financial crime red flags;
Confidence analysing merchant and transaction data to identify patterns, anomalies and emerging risks;
Sound judgement when recommending merchant approval, restrictions, remediation or exit;
Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain audit-ready case notes and risk files;
Good written and spoken Latvian and English;
The ability to collaborate effectively with AML, compliance, operations and commercial stakeholders.
Nice to Have
Familiarity with VIRP, VAMP, ECP, EFM, MATCH or VMSS processes;
Experience supporting enterprise-wide risk assessments or maintaining a risk register;
